Business legislation

New Zealand has a modern, free market economy and business is not strictly controlled. In fact, you’ll find business practice here is very straightforward.

Our business and tax laws are similar to those in other countries in the OECD. Like all developed economies, we’re also concerned about key issues such as the environment, employment rights and health and safety in the workplace. In areas such as these, legislation is well-developed and comprehensive.

Laws are complex and they change frequently. So you’ll need to find out more from the government agencies that are responsible for tax, insurance, employment law, regulation and all the other aspects of establishing and  running a business.

You can also gather useful advice and information through the many business networks that exist in New Zealand.
