People from overseas can apply for a variation of conditions to their current permit if they are in New Zealand:
First, note that if a person is in New Zealand on a Work or Visitor’s Permit and wishes to study full-time for more than three months, they will need to apply for a Student Permit. They can do this at any time before their current permit expires.
They must also remember to allow sufficient time for a decision to be made on their application before their current permit expires. If a person’s current permit does expire, their application for a further permit does not make their stay in New Zealand lawful or give them the right to remain in New Zealand.
Then, follow the steps below to understand what’s involved in applying for a variation in conditions.
Steps to apply for a variation of conditions
Step 1
Complete the Application for Variation of Conditions (NZIS 1020) form available from New Zealand Immigration offices in New Zealand and overseas.
Step 2
Along with your completed (and signed) variation of conditions form you will need to provide:
- the variation of conditions fee
- evidence that you are enrolled in your course
- evidence you have paid for or are exempt from paying the course fees.
Step 3
Your application must be sent to your nearest New Zealand Immigration Service branch.
