Temporary visa applications (visitor, work, student, transit)

The table below shows the percentage of applications processed in the branch within 25 days for the last three months.

In some cases, where more information is needed to support an application, for example a labour market check or a medical referral, applications can take considerably longer than 25 days. Other than the table above, we are unable to predict how long each individual application is likely to take, but we are committed to delivering the fastest possible service and we will keep in touch with you throughout the process of your application.

Applications submitted between March to September: within 10 working days.

Applications submitted between October to February: within 15 working days.

  • We recommend you submit your application five weeks before your intended departure date.
  • Processing time may take longer if we require additional information and/or verification. For certain nationals, processing time may take up to 12 weeks or longer.
  • Medical and/or X-ray certificates that need to be referred may take up to six weeks to process.

Where we cannot process applications within these timeframes, you will be contacted by email. Please do not contact us within the processing timeframe unless it is necessary.

Other

  • Label transfer and New Zealand citizen endorsement: three working days.
Label transfer applications will not be processed on the same day if you submit them at the counter.
  • Permanent resident visa applications (Application from a Resident or Former Resident Visa Holder(INZ 1175)): within 10 working days.

Resident visa applications

Applications for residence class visas will be processed according to the Government’s priority list. New Zealand carefully plans allocation of residence places. The Government's annual residence programme gives priority to skilled and business migrants and the partners of returning New Zealanders.

  • Partnership and dependent child categories: within three to nine months.
  • Parent category: you must receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) before you can submit your resident visa application. Please note the estimated times does not include the Expression of Interest (EOI) draw which is expected to be every three months starting from August 2012. The number of places available in the draw will depend on the number of places available under the New Zealand Residence Programme. Your EOI can stay in the EOI pool for an extended period of time.

The time taken to allocate an EOI or application is as follows:
    • tier one applications: 18 months
    • existing applications lodged under the previous parent and adult child or sibling categories: five years
    • tier two applications: seven years.

Once allocated, the average processing timeframe is four to six months, but this can be longer depending on issues that have to be assessed, such as health.

Please note: the times given for allocation and decision are indicative only and may be subject to change.
