The rebuild of Christchurch is expected to create several work opportunities in the Canterbury region. There is currently a demand for workers, particularly skilled tradesmen such as painters, carpenters and plasterers.

The Canterbury Skill Shortage List (CSSL) PDF [50KB] highlights occupations currently on the Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL) or Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) that are needed for the Christchurch rebuild. Suitable applicants who meet the requirements of these occupations listed and who have a valid job offer in Christchurch may be granted a temporary work visa without a labour market test needing to be conducted with Work and Income New Zealand.

We recommend that Canterbury-based employers list their vacancies with Work and Income before looking into recruiting overseas workers. New Zealand employers who are unable to fill their vacancy locally and decide to support a work visa application for a non-New Zealander, can provide evidence of Work and Income support and engagement upfront. This will give both the potential employer and employee a greater assurance of meeting the labour market test as part of the INZ work visa assessment.
