Background
The Auckland Regional Settlement Strategy was developed under the umbrella of the Auckland Sustainable Cities Programme (for information about the programme see www.sustainableauckland.govt.nz) because attracting skilled migrants and supporting their successful settlement is essential for the sustainable development of the Auckland region.
Auckland is the primary point of entry to New Zealand and a key place of settlement for migrants and refugees. Obtaining appropriate employment is an important way through which they contribute to the region’s economic growth. Additionally many of these new Aucklanders bring new ways of thinking, new knowledge and links to global markets. Having well-settled migrants and refugees helps ensure that these benefits are realised, enriches Auckland communities, and benefits New Zealand as a whole.
The Auckland Regional Settlement Strategy supports and advances the New Zealand Settlement Strategy at a regional level.
Developing the Auckland strategy
The Auckland strategy is a regional and community-based approach, which was led out of Auckland. The strategy was developed in partnership with central and local government, non-government organisations and other stakeholders with settlement-related interests in Auckland, including migrants, refugees, and Pacific people. It was informed by three literature overviews on migrant, refugee, and host community experiences of settlement.

The Auckland strategy contains a vision for the future, 10 goals to support that vision, and specific proposals for making improvements to the way that things are currently done. The strategy was informed by detailed papers for each of the goal areas which discuss the main barriers and challenges to good settlement, the services and support currently provided, and the opportunities to improve life and work outcomes for migrants and refugees settling in Auckland.

A brief summary of the rationale for the strategy, how it was developed, what it includes, and how it is being implemented is also available as an information leaflet PDF [271KB].
Implementing the Auckland strategy
Central and local government, non-government and other community agencies responsible for providing services to support settlement are implementing the strategy through the Auckland Settlement Action Plan. This plan contains actions to improve and build on services, planning and collaboration that support settlement in Auckland. Implementing this action plan is an on-going programme of work over several years.
