V3.50 Operation Deep Freeze and other Antarctic travellers

Immigration Act 1987 s 35A

1. People travelling between mainland New Zealand and the Ross Dependency are regarded for immigration purposes as domestic travellers.
2. Operation Deep Freeze and other travellers to the Antarctic are not required to hold permits while in the Ross Dependency, but they do require a permit when they arrive in New Zealand unless they are exempt from having to hold a permit while in New Zealand.
3. Officers with Schedule 2 delegations and above at the NZIS Christchurch office may grant visitors' permits to such travellers on arrival in New Zealand.
4. Applicants may be granted a permit for a maximum of 3 months over the normal time permitted for visitors to New Zealand (see V2.5.1(a)), and applicants must meet the policy requirements for a visitor permit (see V2.1), except that the fee is waived.
