Education

With opposite seasons to the US, New Zealand’s school year runs from early February to mid-December.  So you will have the children at home for summer break over the Christmas/New Year holidays.

New Zealand has recently adopted a four-term school year with the main holidays (6-8 weeks) being over the December/January period and smaller (2-3 week) breaks in April, July and September/October.

Schooling is compulsory in New Zealand for all children from their sixth until their sixteenth birthday, although most start on their fifth birthday. State schools are fully funded by the government and are co-educational (boys and girls) at primary and intermediate level. Both co-educational and single-sex schooling is available at secondary level.

New Zealand has eight universities, 22 polytechnics (post high school technical training organisations), four teacher training colleges and several thousand private training establishments.
