Applying for a Work to Residence visa

If you have not already checked whether you need a work visa, or you do not know which of the Work to Residence categories to apply under, see our quick check or the full requirements.

Before you begin the application process, there is some important information for Work to Residence applicants.

When you can apply

You can apply for a work visa when you are:

  • living outside New Zealand and you want to travel here
  • already in New Zealand but you are not employed.

Your partner and/or children

Your partner or dependent children cannot be included in your application. They will need to apply for their own visitor, student or work visa to come to New Zealand.

Once you hold a work visa, your partner may be able to apply for a work visa under our Family Stream.

If you need to stay longer

After two years, if you meet the residence requirements, you will be able to apply for residence.  You must be in New Zealand when you lodge the application for residence. You may also be able to apply for a further work visa.

You will need to allow sufficient time for a decision to be made on your application before your current visa expires. If your current visa does expire, your application for a further visa does not make your stay in New Zealand lawful or give you the right to remain in New Zealand while your application is being considered.

Steps to apply

Follow the steps to apply for a Work to Residence visa under the relevant immigration instructions:

  • Long Term Skill Shortage List – for people who have an offer of employment in an occupation on the Long Term Skill Shortage List.
  • Talent (Accredited Employers) – for people who have a job offer from an employer who we have accredited to recruit staff from overseas.
  • Talent (Arts, Culture and Sports) – for people who have recognised talent/ability in the arts, culture or sports.
