Interpreters from Japan

If you have a full-time job offer from a New Zealand employer in the tourism industry who has satisfied us that no suitably qualified New Zealander is available to do the work, you may qualify for a work visa.

We give preference to young people with experience in tourism-related industries who intend to return to Japan to work in areas where their New Zealand experience will benefit either or both countries.

Requirements you must meet

You will need to:

  • meet our health and character requirements
  • show us evidence that you are suitably qualified to interpret and translate Japanese and English.

Requirements your New Zealand employer must meet

Your New Zealand employer must provide:

  • an offer of full-time employment for up to three years as an interpreter and translator
  • a written guarantee that they will meet your wages or salary, and medical insurance for medical treatment not covered under the Accident Insurance Act 1998
  • a written guarantee that they will meet your accommodation needs and the cost of your travel back to your home country once you have completed your employment.

If you are approved

If you are approved, we will grant you a work visa for the length of your employment agreement, up to a maximum of three years.

If you work the full three years in New Zealand and later wish to return here to work as a Japanese interpreter, you will need to have been back in Japan for at least three years.

Apply

To apply under this category, you will need to complete the Work Visa Application (INZ 1015) PDF form and provide evidence that you and your employer meet the requirements stated above.
