Bay of Plenty - work opportunities
The Tauranga, Bay of Plenty region has around 12,100 businesses and more than 55,700 full-time equivalent employees. Significant employment sectors in the region include manufacturing and engineering, professional and business services, logistics, agriculture and horticulture processing and research, health and construction.
Priority One, the region’s economic development organisation, recently undertook a survey which identified a shortage of skilled people in the region. Industries that are experiencing occupational shortages include:
- construction (tradespeople, electricians, surveyors, apprentices, architects, carpenters, draughtspeople, drivers, engineers and plumbers)
- tourism & Hospitality (chefs/kitchen hands, food and beverage/retail assistants, managers/supervisors, travel agents/consultants and housekeeping staff)
- manufacturing & Engineering, including boat building (tradespeople, fitters & turners, welders, machinists, engineers, sheetmetal workers, cabinet makers and salespeople)
- health & Social Services (registered nurses, case managers, practice managers, caregivers, dentists, doctors, physiotherapists, social workers and occupational therapists).
