Social life in New Zealand

Young people in New Zealand enjoy going to movies and cafes with their friends. Bars are popular meeting places, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. But you must be 18 or older to go into a bar.

We have four national TV channels, with a wide range of programmes. You can pay to have Sky TV – it’s a subscription network with five channels. Cable TV gives you dozens of channels to choose from, but you have to pay for cable TV. It’s only available in some parts of New Zealand.

There are hundreds of radio stations across the country. Most of them are regional stations. There are student radio stations in most cities and they play alternative music you won’t hear anywhere else.

In our university cities you’ll find there are lots of activities and events for students – look for notices around the campus to find out what’s on.
