If, once you are here, you find you want to change either the course you’re taking or the education provider offering the course, you can apply for a variation to your permit conditions.
Eligibility
You can apply for a variation of conditions to your current permit:
- if you are a visitor or worker in New Zealand and wish to study part time,
- if you are on a student permit and want to change courses, or
- if you are on a student permit and want to work while studying.
You must prove you have an offer of a place from the education provider to which you wish to transfer.
Any new course must still be taken within the period of the original permit.
Steps to apply for a variation of conditions
Step 1
Complete the Application for Variation of Conditions form (NZIS 1020) PDF.
Step 2
Along with your completed and signed form you will need to provide:
- the variation of conditions fee,
- evidence that you are enrolled in your course, and
- evidence you have paid for or are exempt from paying the course fees.
Step 3
Your application must be sent to your nearest Immigration New Zealand branch.
Note that if you are in New Zealand on a work or visitor permit and wish to study full-time for more than three months, you will need to apply for a student permit. You can do this at any time before your current permit expires.
Remember to allow sufficient time for a decision to be made on your application before your current permit expires. If your current permit does expire, your application for a further permit does not make your stay in New Zealand lawful or give you the right to remain in New Zealand.
