Applying for a change in your permit conditions

You can apply for a variation of conditions to your current permit if:

  • You are a visitor or worker in New Zealand and wish to study part time.
  • You are on a student permit and want to change courses or course providers. You must prove you have an offer of a place from the education provider to which you wish to transfer. Any new course must still be taken within the period of the original permit.
  • You are on a student permit and want to work while studying.

Students Online

If your education provider is certified with Students Online you can make your application at your nearest certified educational institute.

If your educational provider is not certified with Students Online, you'll need to apply for a variation of conditions using the following application steps.

The application steps

Complete the form

Print and complete the Application for Variation of Conditions form (NZIS 1020) PDF. If you cannot print the form, it is available from your nearest Immigration New Zealand branch.

Make sure you submit everything we require, including the fee

Along with your completed and signed variation of conditions form you will need to provide:

  • the variation of conditions fee
  • evidence that you are enrolled in your course, and
  • evidence you have paid for or are exempt from paying the course fees.

Lodge your application

Your application must be sent to your nearest Immigration New Zealand branch.

However, if you are in New Zealand on a work or visitor’s permit and wish to study full time for more than three months, you will need to apply for a student permit. You can do this at any time before your current permit expires.

Remember to allow enough time for a decision to be made on your application before your current permit expires. If your current permit does expire, your application for a further permit does not make your stay in New Zealand lawful or give you the right to remain in New Zealand.

Please note: New Zealand law prohibits any person on a temporary permit, including a student permit, from providing commercial sexual services or operating or investing in a business which provides such services.

To help you make sure you have everything you need to apply, please print out our checklist.
