Waikato - study opportunities

The Waikato region is one of New Zealand’s farming centres (generating 19% of our total export earnings), and some of the country’s main agricultural research centres are based in the area — Landcare research, Agresearch and the Dairying Research Corporation are three of the largest institutes.

The city of Hamilton contains many of the most significant educational institutions in the Waikato region, including the University of Waikato and Wintec. The University provides courses for speakers of English as a second language, and degree level courses are also on offer to international students. Students from overseas are supported by the University’s International Centre, which is a Students Online partner. Wintec (formerly Waikato Polytechnic) is located over a number of campuses in Hamilton. The college is home to over 1,000 international students from 50 different countries.

The chance to study in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island is what draws a growing number of students to the Waikato region. Some of the country’s most popular destinations are within easy reach — snow covered mountain ski areas, the geothermal resort of Rotorua, and Lake Taupo. Students in the Waikato region enjoy a healthy outdoors lifestyle, and are only 90 minutes drive from Auckland’s big city attractions.
