With 1.2 million people, Auckland is the Pacific’s largest city, making it a very popular study destination — in 2004 over 36,000 international students studied in Auckland. ‘The City of Sails’ has a huge amount to offer – live concerts, restaurants with cuisines from all around the world, and world class shopping. This diversity makes the city very attractive to international students, and means that employment opportunities are plentiful, too. There are great study opportunities in Auckland, as well as a multicultural environment and an exciting lifestyle.
Auckland has a long tradition of making students welcome. The University of Auckland was founded in 1883, and has grown to become New Zealand’s largest university with over 40,000 students. It’s not the only tertiary institution in Auckland, though – there are several colleges and academies offering opportunities to students in diverse fields. Other major tertiary providers in the Auckland region are AUT (Auckland Institute of Technology), Unitec, Manakau Institute of Technology and AIS St Helens, all of which are active in recruiting international students and are partners in Students Online.
There are a range of primary and secondary schools that support and encourage international students. Taylor’s College and the New Zealand Institute of Education (both Students Online partners) are just two of a large number of schools that provide English language courses with internationally recognised qualifications, often as preparation for further study in New Zealand.
Many institutions coordinate homestay accommodation for international students, giving you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the New Zealand lifestyle and the English language by living with a Kiwi family.
