Northland - study opportunities

Northland has a great deal to offer international students: a safe and friendly learning environment, a wealth of cultural heritage and tradition, a sub tropical climate, and stunning landscape. It also has fewer international students than you will find in New Zealand’s larger cities – meaning lower costs of living and plenty of room to explore. It has a diverse network of primary and secondary schools, and a polytechnic offering degree courses that stretches over four campuses throughout the region.

The region’s largest tertiary education provider is Northland Polytechnic. Its main campus is in the city of Whangarei, and it runs other sites throughout the region in Bay of Islands, Kaikohe, Rawene, Kaitaia and Dargaville. Courses provided include a number of English language programmes, some vocational diplomas, and a smaller selection of bachelor and degree certificates. The polytechnic prides itself on the attention it pays to each student, boasting no more than 15 students to a tutor on most programmes.

Northland is home to a well established group of primary and secondary schools, including the prestigious Whangarei Boys’ and Whangarei Girls’ High Schools, which cater to many overseas students. Also providing secondary education in the Northland region are Pompallier College, Kamo High School and Tikipunga High School, with a national reputation as a leading school of art.
