Finding work

You will need to include a job offer with your residence application, so you're going to need to find a job.

There are several ways of finding work in New Zealand:

  • advertisements in the newspapers
  • advertisements on employment websites
  • personal approaches to organisations and businesses
  • employment agencies.

Some organisations and employers are keen to get skilled and qualified people to join their staff. You may find that they welcome your curriculum vitae (or resume) even if they don’t have a specific job vacancy right now.

For some jobs you’ll need good English skills and an understanding of New Zealand culture and working conditions. There are different work opportunities in different regions of New Zealand too. There are more part time jobs now than there were a few years ago. And there’s often seasonal work in rural areas and smaller towns.

Working life in New Zealand may be quite different from your home country. It’s a good idea to find out about the work environment in New Zealand – culture, conditions and laws that protect people in work and give them assistance when it’s needed. Find out about the opportunities to work by looking at work environment in one of our Work Categories.
