Voting

New Zealand has a democratic parliamentary system similar to the United Kingdom. Parliament is elected every three years.

You can vote if:

  • you are over 18 years of age
  • you are a permanent resident of New Zealand
  • you have lived in New Zealand for at least one year sometime in your life.

You can find out more about elections and voting in the government section in our Living in New Zealand Guide.
