Visas and permits for residence in New Zealand

What’s the difference between a visa and permit

How long is my Residence Visa valid?

Residence Visas are generally valid for 12 months from the date of issue. If you do not travel to New Zealand within this time, your Residence Visa will expire and you may need to apply for residence again.

How long is my Residence Permit valid?

Your Residence Permit allows you to live in New Zealand indefinitely. It expires when you leave New Zealand.

You may need a Returning Resident's Visa to re-enter New Zealand. Your first Returning Resident’s Visa is issued when you are granted your Residence Visa or your first Residence Permit in New Zealand and is valid for two years from the date it is issued.

Is there a fee to pay when I apply for a visa?

Yes. You’ll need to pay a fee when you apply for a Residence Visa or Permit. Go to the fees finder to find out what you’ll need to pay.
