Gisborne is home to a vibrant and progressive community, serviced by a full range of modern amenities.

Natural features include long sunshine hours, an extensive coastline of golden sandy beaches, unspoilt natural bush and beautiful lake and river areas.

Recreational facilities include excellent golf courses, the tennis centre, the polo ground and various bowling greens and cricket pitches. The area also has sports stadia, national rugby playing fields and a speedway track. In addition, there are two indoor swimming pools, field hockey facilities, a YMCA gymnasium and fitness centres, netball courts and rivers, and beaches used by rowers, surfers and swimmers.

Gisborne’s public hospital, opened in 1985, is one of the newest in New Zealand. Gisborne is also home to the Chelsea Private Hospital.

Property costs in Gisborne are low relative to other cities and wherever you choose to live, you’re never too far from the beach. Gisborne has a wide range of housing types and styles, from colonial homesteads through to modern architecturally designed houses.

The City’s shopping district is a boulevard of wide-lined streets. National chain stores are well represented as well as local stores and boutique retailers. The central shopping district is complemented by smaller shopping villages throughout the district.
