On 29 May 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay were the first people to reach the summit of Mt Everest, the world’s highest peak. The mountain had been attempted unsuccessfully  by 15 previous expeditions. In 2000 Hillary was voted the greatest New Zealander of the millennium.
