Pets

You may need to plan at least six months ahead if you want to bring any pets with you to New Zealand. We have very strict regulations to protect our environment.

Cats and dogs from many countries are allowed to be brought into New Zealand. However, they will need to meet certain requirements before they come here and may have to be put in quarantine when they arrive. Australia is the only exception to this: you can move your pets freely between New Zealand and Australia.

It’s best to start planning early because the preparation process can take up to six months even before you arrive in New Zealand. The requirements and costs vary, depending on the country you’re coming from.
