Can I return to New Zealand?

While we welcome residents back to New Zealand we must also protect the interests of everyone living in New Zealand. And we do this by using a Returning Resident’s Visa.

If you’re considering taking a trip out of New Zealand, you’ll probably need a Returning Resident’s Visa to continue your residence in New Zealand.

We’ve a number of requirements you must meet to gain a Returning Resident’s Visa.

And you’ll also need to pay a fee (unless this is your first application) when you apply for a Returning Resident’s Visa. Go to the fees finder to find out what you’ll need to pay.

Take a short cut to find out…

See our examples to get an overview of whether you’re eligible for a Returning Resident’s Visa.  And take a look at our quick checks for residence gained before 30 October 1995 or for residence gained after 30 October 1995.

If you think you’re eligible, then you need to apply for a Returning Resident’s Visa before you leave New Zealand.
