Housing

Housing New Zealand Corporation

Housing New Zealand Corporation is the government’s main adviser on housing and housing services.

Housing New Zealand allocates affordable rental accommodation, based on housing needs, to people:

  • on low incomes
  • with disabilities
  • in unsuitable living conditions
  • discriminated against in the private rental market.

Access to Housing New Zealand’s rental homes depends on a number of things, including current living conditions, income, and social, medical and personal needs. Applicants (including all household members) must:

  • be New Zealand residents or part of the Refugee Quota Programme
  • have assets valued below a defined asset threshold
  • have an income that is less than a set threshold.

Eligible applicants are put on a waiting list. Priority is given to those with the greatest housing need, rather than to those who have waited the longest. The majority of Housing New Zealand tenants are charged Income-Related Rent (IRR), which means that they pay 25 percent of their income in rent.

Housing New Zealand Corporation offers clients access to Language Line, the telephone interpreting service. To speak to a HNZC representative in one of the 39 languages currently offered, phone 0800 801 601. State your language and ‘Language Line’ for an interpreter in your language to be connected.
