Residence application requirements

There are a number of general residence requirements that residence applicants and any family members included in their application will need to show they meet at the time they apply for residence.

We also have specific work-related requirements applicants need to meet to be eligible for residence.

General requirements include the need for the applicant to:

  • be healthy - we’ll need to see recent medical and x-ray certificates. Pregnant women and children under the age of 11 years are not required to submit x-ray certificates unless a special report is required.
  • be of good character – applicants aged 17 years and over need to get a police certificate from the New Zealand Police as well as from any country they’ve lived in for 12 months or more within the last 10 years.
  • show us evidence of their relationship with any partner included in their application
  • show us evidence of their relationship with any dependent children included in their application
  • show us evidence that any partner and dependent children included in their application meet our English language standards.
