Visas and permits for Working to Residence

What does a Work to Residence Work Permit allow?

A Work Permit granted under this category allows New Zealand employers to offer work to talented and qualified people from overseas as a step to settling here permanently.

The Work to Residence category also provides a pathway for people wanting to establish a business in New Zealand, with a view to later applying for residence.  These people can instead apply for a Long Term Business Visa and Permit.  You can find out more about the Long Term Business Visa and Permit option by going to our website for migrants.  This means you will leave this Employ site.

How long can an overseas worker work for?

In most cases workers from overseas can work here for up to 30 months under our Work to Residence policies. When they have worked here for two years they can then apply for residence.

Who can get a Work Visa or Permit?

Most people who need a Work Visa or Permit are able to get one provided they meet all the requirements.

But, to protect the interests of New Zealanders we don’t issue visas to people convicted of serious criminal offences, or removed from New Zealand and banned from returning for up to five years, or involved in certain activities.
