Employing students and trainees needing work experience
You may be eligible for a Work Visa or Permit if you need work experience to complete or further your study or training.
Students or trainees who may be eligible for employment in New Zealand include:
- dental or medical trainees wanting to fulfil a compulsory practical training requirement for their course. They must be appropriately qualified and experienced, and must not hold a New Zealand Student or Visitor Permit. To gain a Work Visa or Permit for up to six months, along with other terms and conditions, these trainees will need to show Immigration New Zealand a letter of acceptance from a New Zealand hospital.
- a student wanting to fulfil a course requirement by undertaking practical work experience in New Zealand. These students may be eligible for a Work Visa or Permit for up to six months. These students need to have the support of their educational institution, and have an offer of work from a New Zealand educational institution or employer.
- a jockey aged 16 years or over wishing to undertake an apprenticeship in New Zealand. Apprentice jockeys may be eligible for a Work Visa or Permit for up to four years. These apprentice jockeys need a job offer from a New Zealand trainer; a guarantee of maintenance and accommodation from the New Zealand Racing Conference; and a guarantee of repatriation from the individual trainer, should the applicant not continue the apprenticeship.
