Requirements for special fields of work

An employer may be eligible to temporarily employ people from overseas who have particular skills that will benefit New Zealand or in specific fields of work not covered by our other categories. In all cases, applicants must meet health and character requirements.

  • Character requirements for temporary entry to New Zealand

To be granted a New Zealand visa or permit we need to be assured that a person from overseas and any family included in their application are of good character.  We make this requirement to protect the well-being and security of New Zealanders.

  • Foreign fishing vessel crew

Employers wanting people from overseas to crew chartered foreign fishing vessels must apply for work visas on behalf of the prospective crew members.

  • Interpreters from Japan

Employers in New Zealand’s tourism industry may be able to employ interpreters from Japan.

  • Part-time workers

People here on a Visitor’s Permit may be eligible to have their permit conditions varied to allow them to work part time for a New Zealand employer.

  • Ministers of religion, missionaries, members of religious orders

New Zealand organisations and employers may be able to bring ministers of religion, missionaries or members of religious orders to work temporarily in New Zealand.
