 Employing workers temporarily from overseas

Bar worker

Seeking to fill a short-term skills shortage or looking to tap international expertise to train New Zealanders?

Our General Work category provides for New Zealand employers to secure people from overseas on a temporary basis where New Zealanders are either not available or cannot be readily trained locally to do the work.

Workers from overseas are eligible for temporary work visas and permits if they:

  • have an offer of a job from a New Zealand employer
  • are skilled in an occupation that’s in demand here
  • have the skills needed for a particular purpose or event such as a tournament, a show or for certain professional reasons
  • are a student or trainee gaining work experience in New Zealand
  • have completed their studies in New Zealand and are now eligible for a Study to Work visa or permit
  • have been accepted into an INZ approved work exchange scheme..

To keep up our good standards and reputation, we have some definite rules and requirements that both New Zealand employers and workers from other countries have to meet.

You could also employ a working holiday maker who will already hold a work permit.
