Employing young people on working holidays

New Zealand employers have the opportunity to fill skills shortages by employing young people from overseas who are travelling around New Zealand on working holidays.

Working Holiday makers hold open work permits which means they can work for any employer sometimes for a limited period depending on the Working Holiday Scheme they have a work permit for.

Online applications

In July 2005 we introduced an online application system for some Working Holiday makers which means they will hold an electronic permit and the holder will provide an employer with a printed copy.  Records are retained electronically by Immigration New Zealand and details can be accessed by the holder via their homepage on our website or via the National Contact Centre.

While here under a working holiday scheme, a working holiday permit holder can also apply for other permit options:

Working Holidaymaker Extension permit

The Working Holidaymaker Extension is a separate permit that people currently holding working holidays can apply for at the end of their stay if they have undertaken three months of seasonal work in the horticulture or viticulture industry during their working holiday. The Working Holidaymaker Extension permit is endorsed with the same conditions as the original working holiday permit.
