Offering places to tertiary students

Whether a polytechnic, university, college of education, wananga or private training establishment, tertiary education providers can offer courses to international students, provided they meet certain conditions:

  • Private training establishments (PTEs) - where courses are longer than three months we will check that:
    • the course must be an approved course
      and
    • the PTE must be registered with and accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to offer the course.
  • Institutions - this group covers universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and wänanga.   Where courses are longer than three months we will check that:
    • the insitutions are accredited to offer the course
      and
    • unless the student is an NZAP student, their enrolment does not deprive a New Zealand student from gaining a place.

Young students, aged 17 years or younger, may be accompanied by an eligible guardian.
