Can a student become liable for deportation?

If students from overseas fail to meet our conditions of studying in New Zealand they may become liable for deportation. We will do this if a student:

  • fails to attend their course
  • undertakes employment outside our restrictions. Find out what work students can undertake while here studying
  • stops attending the course for which they were granted the visa and enrol in one we’ve not approved. They may be able to change courses once they’re here but they must first contact us so that we can either change their visa conditions or consider their application for a new student visa.  Want to know more about changing courses and/or education providers?
  • receives NZAP funding and that funding stops
  • is required to live with a guardian and the guardian becomes liable for deportation.

All temporary entry visa holders must remain on a valid visa at all times. If a visa holder remains in New Zealand after their visa expires, they will become unlawful and will also be liable for deportation.
