If students from overseas are in New Zealand and applying for a further visa, they need to allow sufficient time for a decision to be made on their application before their current visa expires.  If the student's current visa does expire, their application for a further visa does not make their stay in New Zealand lawful or give them the right to remain in New Zealand.
