The government has unveiled a package of proposals for a new Immigration Act.
In April 2006, the Government announced the most comprehensive review of immigration legislation in 20 years. A discussion paper was released for public consultation and nearly 4000 submissions from individuals and organisations were received.
A package of proposals for new immigration legislation has now been agreed by Cabinet following the public consultation.
An Immigration Bill to replace the existing 1987 Act will now be drafted ready for introduction to Parliament in April 2007. The Select Committee stage will provide further opportunities for public input.
