Frequently asked questions

Application procedure

When do I submit a visitor visa application?

You need to apply for a Visitor visa when you intend to visit New Zealand for the purposes of tourism, visiting family, social visits and short business matters.

My purpose is not included in the above list, what does this mean?

There are special visitor categories.  Requirements for each category vary.

How do I determine the correct visitor category?

You may visit www.immigration.govt.nz or confirm with the VIA Center at (63 2) 8459 222.

Do I need to pay the visitor visa fee?

There is no application fee for visits less than 59 days.

Applicants who clearly intend to remain beyond 59 days in New Zealand, or are assessed as likely to seek to apply for a different type of visa onshore, will be advised either that their applications will be replaced to more appropriate visa categories and charged the appropriate visa fee accordingly, i.e. partner/dependents of a long term worker, or assessed in light of the determination made.

However, if you are holding a Citizen of another country, you will be required to pay the fee. Please refer to the link below.

How much is the visitor visa fee if my intent is to stay beyond 59 days?

See our office and fees finder.

Is the visa fee refundable?

No, the application fee is a processing fee and is non-refundable regardless of the outcome of your visa application.
