Medical requirements

Frequently asked questions about medical requirements.

What is the validity of my medical certificate?

They are valid for three months from the date the panel doctor signed the certificate. Please make sure your medicals are valid when you submit them with your application.

Can I go to any doctor or to my own general practitioner?

No. We have a list of INZ accredited panel doctors around the country. Refer to the Panel Doctors list to find an authorised panel doctor near you.

Can I go to any doctor for any additional tests required?

In general, no. You will have to discuss this with the INZ panel doctor who conducted the initial exam. They are responsible for referring you to the specialists required and you will have to discuss this with them.

If I get declined, can I still use the same medical certificate filed with your office?

Upon submission to INZ, your medicals are still valid for 24 months for any temporary visa application you will lodge after. As such, upon lodgement of your succeeding application, please make a mention of it on the visa application form under ‘health section’ that your medicals have been submitted with your previous application.

If there are findings noted, does that mean my application will be automatically declined?

No. However, we will be referring your medical certificate to New Zealand for referral to our medical assessors and this will take about 6-8 weeks. If you are not to be considered of acceptable standard of health (ASH), you will be given the opportunity to comment before a final decision is made on your application.

If my medical reports state that I am fit to work or travel overseas but there are significant findings notes, does this mean my medicals are clear?

Not necessarily. INZ will assess your health and any significant findings noted on the medical form. If there is a need to refer to our medical assessors in New Zealand, we will do so.

I only applied for a 6-month visa but my actual intention is to join my partner in New Zealand, should I complete the full medical certificate?

It is recommended that you do so to avoid any delays in the processing of your application.

How much does a medical certificate cost?

Please contact any of the panel doctors on the list and refer to them directly.
