A World of New Discoveries
A unique genetic heritage, pioneering resourcefulness and technical excellence combine in New Zealand’s biotechnology industry.
New Zealand is internationally competitive in agricultural biotechnology, genomics, biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics and vaccines, nutraceuticals and marine natural health products.
In recent years, New Zealand’s biotechnologists have been merging discoveries from world-class primary sectors and research organisations to improve efficiencies and create new applications in the agricultural biotechnology industries. Simultaneously, New Zealand has built a number of world-class biomedical research teams at the country’s medical schools and universities, who are developing new treatments and diagnostics.
We have significant strengths in research, as internationally renowned research institutions and facilities, such as the Crown Research Institutes, deliver world-class scientific research in both agricultural bioscience and human health at internationally competitive costs. New Zealand scientists are involved in areas such as cytokine discovery, the use of fermentation micro-organisms, post-harvest storage of flowers and fruit, wood processing, gene therapy, human foetal development and cancer drugs.
Biotechnology is one of the country’s fastest-growing sectors and a location for biotechnologists around the world to watch out for.
